SIBUR has offset the carbon footprint of the Russian delegation's participation in COP29 – the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which took place in Azerbaijan. This marks the first carbon-neutral delegation with a confirmed international verification in the Conference's history. The delegation's carbon footprint amounted to 970 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
The offset was achieved using carbon units generated through a climate project focused on improving energy efficiency at SIBUR-Neftekhim. These carbon units were debited from the Company's account in the Russian Registry.
Kept performed the carbon footprint calculation, while TÜV AUSTRIA Standards & Compliance provided verification of the carbon neutrality statement. The carbon offset certificate is accessible on the UN Global Compact Network Russia website. The process is coordinated by the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia, which provides support to the Russian delegation and working group.
Ruslan Edelgeriev, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Change:
“A verified carbon-neutral delegation combined with a record number of participants – this initiative demonstrates Russia’s leadership and innovative approach to the climate agenda and reaffirms Russia's strong commitment to its climate and environmental goals. I am confident that these decisions will serve as an example for other countries participating in the discussions and lead to outstanding results that extend beyond ambitious promises.”
Irina Petrunina, Director of Department for Competition, Energy Efficiency, and Environment at the Russian Ministry of Economic Development:
“The Russian Ministry of Economic Development has established a national platform for issuing and trading carbon units, along with its supporting regulatory framework. To offset the Russian delegation’s carbon footprint, we implemented an offset mechanism developed in 2024 that allows for reducing one party's carbon footprint without requiring that party to register in the registry of carbon units. This mechanism broadens access to the carbon market, enabling a wide range of companies to reduce their carbon footprint. The voluntary carbon market serves as an effective tool for engaging businesses in achieving low-carbon development goals. Our country holds immense potential for climate projects and efficient GHG solutions through industry modernisation and environmental improvements. We appreciate SIBUR's initiative and active role in advancing the climate agenda.”
Natalia Dorpeko, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Network Russia:
“SIBUR's offset of the Russian national delegation's carbon footprint at COP29, the most significant annual UN Climate Change Conference, clearly demonstrates the commitment of Russian businesses and the nation as a whole to addressing climate challenges. The Russian delegation, comprising approximately 1,000 people, has made history as the first carbon-neutral delegation with confirmed international verification at the Conference.
SIBUR conducted all carbon footprint offsetting procedures with complete transparency, setting an example of best practices in this field.”
SIBUR maintains a portfolio of eight completed climate projects with a total greenhouse gas emission reduction effect of 10.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent over the next decade. Of this total, 3.3 million verified carbon units are already available for operations in Russian and international markets. SIBUR has completed more than 20 carbon unit transactions, enabling its customers and partners to reduce or fully offset the carbon footprint of their operations, products, and events.
