On February 21, 2025, the International Mother Language Day is celebrated.
The International Mother Language Day was established by the General Conference of UNESCO on November 17, 1999. Its goal is to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and protect endangered languages.
Languages are of utmost importance for education and sustainable development, serving as the primary means of transmitting traditional knowledge and cultural heritage. Today, there are approximately 8,324 languages spoken in the world, but many of them are at risk of extinction due to globalization and social changes. The 25th anniversary of the International Mother Language Day marks a quarter of a century of efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote mother languages. This milestone highlights the role of languages in preserving cultural heritage, developing education, and strengthening peace in society.
The International Mother Language Day, first proclaimed by UNESCO and later endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizes the role of languages in promoting inclusion and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Multilingual education not only helps create inclusive societies but also supports the preservation of minority languages, languages of national minorities, and indigenous peoples. This is a key factor in ensuring equal access to education and opportunities for lifelong learning.
