March 30, 2025, marks the International Day of Zero Waste, an important UN initiative aimed at transforming our approach to consumption and waste.
Background
This day was established by UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/77/161 in 2022, following a proposal by Turkey. Its purpose is to promote sustainable production and consumption models, support the circular economy, and raise awareness about the critical global waste crisis.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-Habitat jointly support the observance of the International Day of Zero Waste.
Why is it important?
Each year, over 2 billion tons of solid waste are generated worldwide, with a significant portion ending up in landfills or oceans, harming ecosystems and human health. Waste management is a major driver of climate change, accounting for 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2025, the focus of this day will be on the fashion and textile industry, emphasizing the need for action to reduce waste and promote sustainable production and consumption.
This theme highlights the importance of transitioning to a circular economy, where resources are reused, and waste is minimized. The fashion industry plays a significant role in environmental impact due to high production and consumption levels.
