The Forum is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and includes all UN Member States. Since its establishment in 2000, the Forum has achieved significant milestones, including:

The adoption of the first UN Forest Instrument in 2007
The establishment of the Global Forest Financing Facilitation Network (GFFFN) in 2015
The approval of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030 in 2017, featuring six Global Forest Goals.
