International Forum "Arctic: Present and Future"
On December 12-13, the International Forum "Arctic: Present and Future" named after A.N. Chilingarov was held in Saint Petersburg.
The UNGC Network Russia participated in the session "Preserving Ethnicity: Interaction Between Indigenous Peoples and Business." This highly relevant discussion focused on increasing the involvement of Russia’s indigenous peoples in the Sustainable Development Agenda and in finding solutions to environmental and climate challenges. At the same time, we must all recognize society’s responsibility to indigenous minorities when making decisions that directly impact their present and future in the territories of their traditional residence and economic activities.
A particularly insightful session was "Adaptation and Management: Climate Change and Permafrost Degradation." An especially compelling speech was delivered by Stanislav Seleznev, Vice President of Norilsk Nickel.
The impact of climate change on the resilience of indigenous peoples was also addressed, with an important speech by Mikhail Pogodaev, Deputy Minister of the Ministry for the Development of the Arctic and Indigenous Affairs of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
