The session is being held in accordance with the resolution adopted by the fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2), in which the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is invited to convene an INC to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. INC began its work in the second half of 2022 and aims to complete it by the end of 2024. The tool will be based on an integrated approach that covers the entire life cycle of plastic, including its production, design and disposal.
