Communication on Progress (CoP)

Communication on Progress (CoP) is the main reporting document for the UN Global Compact and reflects the actions that companies are taking to achieve the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact. The 2024 CoP is a mandatory requirement and must be completed by all UN Global Compact business participants.

The main objectives of the CoP:

• Strengthening accountability for corporate sustainability activities to ensure the integrity of the UN Global Compact initiative;

• Promoting continuous learning and improving the effectiveness of corporate activities in the field of sustainable development;

• Increasing stakeholders' access to information on participants' implementation of the Ten Principles and contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The submission period for the mandatory 2024 Communication on Progress (CoP) opens on 1 April and closes on 31 July 2024.

New joiners do not need to submit a CoP until the year after joining. For example, participants joining the Global Compact in 2024 do not need to submit a CoP until 2025.

Participants, excluding new joiners, who fail to submit a 2024 CoP within the submission period will be listed as ‘Non-communicating’ on their participant profile.

Since 2023, a new form of the CoP has been introduced.
Participants must submit the annual CoP through the CoP digital platform, accessible from the participant dashboard.

Ensure that you have access to the UN Global Compact dashboard. Refer to the user's guide, to learn how to request credentials. Resources: CoP Policy, CoP Amendment Policy, CoP Guidebook, CoP Questionnaire, Step-by-Step CoP submission Guide.

The enhanced Communication on Progress (CoP) consists of two elements that must be submitted through the CoP digital platform:

  1. CEO Statement of Continued Support, publicly expressing your company’s ongoing commitment to the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact at the highest level. The statement is a standardized template that is signed electronically.
  2. CoP Questionnaire, reporting on corporate action and performance related to the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The CoP questionnaire consists of 47-80 (about 55 on average) questions. The difference in the number of questions depends on the company's business sector.

The questionnaire consists of five sections:

The first section "Governance" - provides an interdisciplinary overview of the management structure of companies in the field of sustainable development;

The second section "Human Rights" - conducts a survey of companies about their activities in accordance with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact;

The third section "Labor" - conducts a survey of companies about their activities in accordance with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact;

The fourth section "Environment" - conducts a survey of companies about their activities in accordance with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact;

The fifth section "Anti-corruption" - conducts a survey of companies on their activities in accordance with the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact.

In each section, companies will answer questions about the process and policies that demonstrate the company's commitment to progress, efforts made to prevent negative social and environmental impacts, performance indicators, as well as mechanisms for correcting the situation and reporting on complaints and analyzing lessons learned.

! For the 2024 reporting year, a sustainability report uploaded through the digital platform can be submitted in lieu of the CoP Questionnaire.

Please note that all data, including supplemental documentation that was submitted by a participating company through the CoP digital platform, will be made publicly available on the UN Global Compact website.
