ECONOMY, ECOLOGY, MAN What impact does the global sustainable development agenda and the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have on business strategies and practices today? The session of the UN Global Compact Local Network will be devoted to the disclosure and discussion of aspects that business need to take into account when incorporating elements of this agenda in its activities. The session will be held on July 1, 2021 with the support of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Investment Development Agency of the Republic of Tatarstan, continuing a series of regional discussions under the auspices of the UNGC Network Russia.

On the one hand, this agenda has been adopted by the UN and all the UN member states, including Russia, as a no-alternative one, and the private sector plays a significant role in its implementation. Together with national governments and civil society, business is at the center of the transition to a completely new development model, to a new economy - sustainable development. The economy of sustainable development is an inclusive, resource-saving, supportive of ecological and social systems, human-centered economy that provides a decent future not only for current, but also for future generations. Sustainability is gradually becoming the main factor that can guarantee the growth, efficiency and profitability of the business in the near future.
On the other, today, the Russian entrepreneurial community decides for itself, in different ways and with varying degrees of maturity, how relevant this agenda is for business and how exactly it can or should be integrated into usual commercial models.

The expert community of international organizations, business unions and associations in Russia (the UN Global Compact (UNGC) Network Russia, the UN in Russia, the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, etc.) has established an unambiguous position: sustainable development, commercial and risk strategies are inseparable, and business, under pressure from investors, consumers, customers and all other stakeholders, should adapt to this new reality as soon as possible.

The topic also got into the all-Russian public spotlight, at the level of signals sent to the regions. In 2020, Russia reported on progress in achieving the SDGs to the UN, and a civil society’s review on the SDGs implementation was also presented. The Presidential Executive Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and many other structures of the Russian Government, the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation are involved in the discussion of effective state and commercial interests, borders and specific aspects, as well as national interests in the context of sustainable development. Sustainable Development Councils have been created under the Minister of Economic Development of Russia, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia. The position of the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Relations with International Organizations to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals has been established.

A business community of leaders – companies committed to sustainable development values – has been formed in Russia. The concepts of impact (both positive and negative), ESG (environment, social, governance), responsible financing and investment, SDG indicators, responsible supply chain, and etc. have appeared in everyday use of such a business.

Many successful companies, in order to maintain their success in the future, have launched a systematic review of procedures, principles, technologies and standards, taking into account sustainable development values – Issues of production, marketing and supply, capital raising and investment, corporate communications and sustainable development management systems, human rights, labor relations and anti-corruption, innovative sustainable business models and external evaluations of outcomes.

The trend has an impact on small and medium-sized businesses, growing rapidly at the startup level. A lot of, if not the main, most promising and approved business ideas today (except digital ones) include solutions in the field of reducing carbon intensity, recycling plastic and other materials, cyclical and sharing economy, sustainable development of regions, inclusion, gender equality, food security, education, equal access, etc. Businesses, authorities, consultants, experts, and the market as a whole need such ideas.

Recognizing and unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and the formation of long-term strategies for its existence in the context of sustainable development is one of the most important tasks for business today.

Key topics for discussion:
- The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and business activity
- How exactly can business contribute to the SDGs achievement?
